What is a catch-all phrase for pun, irony, punchline and other humorous elements that make a joke a joke? The phrase should not be restricted to a specific category of humor or a specific part in the joke. A counterpart exists in Chinese and literally means "laugh point."

"The joke is ..." is what one would say; Also, "But that's not the joke." So I s'pose joke is the humor element in the joke.

  • See: Taxonomy of Humor listing various types here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humour#Taxonomy HTH. What you mean by Joke is actually "Humor," a broad term encompassing all types included in the above list.

  • I can see you mention it in the question, but the punchline is usually considered the funny part of a joke (generally coming at the end). "Punchline" is less often applied to e.g. visual humor but is sometimes used well beyond the traditional spoken setup-punchline structure. Is there some reason you don't like punchline? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_line

  • Please supply a joke as an example and point out the portion(s) that fit what you're trying to name.

  • The research on humour points to "using exaggeration" as the core, and it's possible to see how in the worlds funniest joke exaggeration may be observed where the word sure is used, even if the punchline is the sound of a shot. Other similar concepts may be described by applying absurdity /preposterous / ridiculous. Personally I would use absurdity to describe "A peanut ran up to a policeman, and gasping for breath said, Help me officer I've been assaulted"
