Higher frequency RAM already installed can I put one of lower frequency?

My laptop support DDR4 RAM 2400 MHZ but the manufacturer installed two 4GB RAM of 2666MHZ each which runs at 2400MHZ .

Now to me as consumer 2666MHZ RAM cost more so can I purchase RAM of 2400MHZ to work along existing RAM of 2666MHZ ?

My notebook is inspiron 5480

  • This may well work but it's generally a bad idea to mix different types of RAM. Also if you have 2 DIMMS installed you may need to remove 1.
