Related to Simple past usage
I didn’t see her for over 20 years and then I bumped into her last week.
I read this sentence on Cambridge dictionary's page related to Simple past vs present perfect usage.I can't understand why this sentence is correct.i think past perfect (had not seen) should come instead of simple past(didn't see) to show one action occurred before other.can someone clarify.

'Had not seen' would be more usual in this context. However, if you began by referring to events further back in the past, it might be logical to say 'We sat next to one another in primary school. After that I didn't see her for 20 years...'

'Had not seen' would be more usual in this context. However, if you began by referring to events further back in the past, it might be logical to say 'We sat next to one another in primary school. After that I didn't see her for 20 years...'
