In mac osx, I'm trying to write a spinner that takes in a command and spins while running it

0

The usage would be for long commands called from the command line programatically. In my case php will be calling yarn update. If there is a space in the command I can't figure out how to run it.

I've been looking at the following

alias spin='{ f=$(cat -);
eval $f;
while [ -n "$(ps -p $! -o pid=)" ]; do
echo -n ".";
sleep 1;
done
}<<<'

or

alias spin2='eval $*; echo $*; echo $!;
while [ -n "$(ps -p $! -o pid=)" ]; do
echo -n ".";
sleep 1;
done;
echo "all done"'

using zsh on macos mojave

the usage for testing would be spin sleep 4 or spin yarn install

not much of a spinner, I started off that way but I'd go for anything simple at the moment hence the dots.

cheers and thanks
