What is the type of document used to describe the possibility of something? For example, a document used to investigate, and formulate a conclusion on a topic is called a treatise! What would the name of a work that looks to describe the methods by which something could be achieved, and then investigates by attempting to use those possible methods. For example, I want to repair a hole in a garment. I would first research the methods of repair for garments (patch, sow, replacement), and then document my successes with each individual method. Lastly, a conclusion would be presented at the end of a document!

Thanks!

It's a contingency plan.

From Oxford Dictionaries:

A plan designed to take account of a possible future event or circumstance.

These are usually for more complicated things than your example.

  • I am not referring to a future event, or circumstance, or anything that might be, rather an investigation into methods of doing something (like a use case in software engineering). A way of achieving a particular set of goals!

What you've described — a problem statement, followed by analysis and recommendations — sounds like a technical report, or simply a report.

...a document that describes the process, progress, or results of technical or scientific research or the state of a technical or scientific research problem.[1][2] It might also include recommendations and conclusions of the research.

I believe what you're discussing is referred to as a study:

    [Merriam-Webster]

    2 c : careful or extended consideration

// the proposal is under study
2 d (1) : a careful examination or analysis of a phenomenon, development, or question
    2 d (2) : the published report of such a study

It's the last sense that is the most appropriate, even if somewhat recursive (a study is the published report of a study).

Studies (or their results) are submitted as articles to journals and, when referring to them, you can refer to them in general as studies.

Studies present a goal, a number of methods used, along with their steps, in trying to reach that goal, a comparative analysis of the results of each method, and a conclusion in support of one of the methods.

      Feasibility Study, Project Initiation Document.

In project management it is known as a ‘project identification document’ (PID). Or Project Initiation Document’. It identifies the scope, budget, outline of things needed, and the benefits of doing whatever the project is about.

The PID is used to create clarity for oneself, to allow communication about funding (if needed) and to share the idea with others.

It doesn’t define the design of the thing - that is done in a later document known as the design document.

If you’d like to know the other stages of projects, then you can google ‘what are the 5 stages of projects’.

The stages, and their relevant documents, work for all sizes of project - from a sewing project, to throwing a party, buying a car, or building a new hotel.

There are various methodologies for project management such as PRINCE2. But Prince2 didn’t invent the concepts as it says on wiki. Project management was around before they came along!

Here’s a link that talks about what goes in the Project Initiation Document (PID):

      https://www.toolshero.com/project-management/project-initiation-document-pid/

So there are 5 different documents for each stage, depending on the complexity of the project.

A single document that scopes out the project, budget, possibilities, and takes a stab at positing how it might be done, is called ‘a feasibility study’ - a study of whether something is ‘feasible’ - able to be brought into reality.

is an assessment of the practicality of a proposed project or system. Wikipedia

A single document that scopes out the project, budget, possibilities, and takes a stab at positing how it might be done, is called ‘a feasibility study’ - a study of whether something is ‘feasible’ - able to be brought into reality.
