Can we export dlopen_ext function from the libdl.so in Android Nougat?

I would like to export dlopen_ext function from libdl.so in Android Nougat code 7.1. My goal is to intercept dlopen. I can customize the Nougat code to get this done. I could see that the latest Android code is having __loader_dlopen which is exported. This is not the available in Android 7.1.
I am trying to understand what are the side effects/problems of making dlopen_ext public?
