Can I add a period to a quotation or are brackets needed?

0

Let's say someone else wrote, "The bug flew into the glass and got hurt."

I want to quote it. Can I write the following and "silently" add a new period or do I need a bracket for it? Same question on the capitalization. Is this just a personal preference matter?

He wrote, "the bug flew into the glass."

He wrote, "[t]he bug flew into the glass[.]"

You don't have to use brackets around punctuation, nor to capitalize for the purposes of your text.
