USB-C display over passive DP adapter

I understand there needs to be hardware support for connecting a monitor and PC with a reversible USB-C cable, but if this is a DisplayPort signal, would a scenario like this work?

adapter

Some desktops now come with DisplayPort only and I suppose this will be a more common off-the-shelf configuration in the coming years. I am wondering whether a USB-C-powered monitor (such as Asus MB16AC) could be connected to one without a dedicated "DisplayPort over USB-C" output and without a USB-A adapter/driver.

  • This all depends on the hardware

  • I have not seen this sort of cable adapter, where DisplayPort is transformed to USB-C (or ThunderBolt). Usually, the more complex connector is on the computer / video provider end.

  • Startech has such cable, but they are menat for a laptop on the USB-C side and DP on the monitor side (no mention on the other way round).
