What's a good way to test that a self-hosted website is accessible outside your network?

I know about doing the "phone on mobile data" trick, but is there a more professional way to do it all via the same development machine?

If it's SSL, hit it with the qualsys test. If not, hit it with one of the "is it down" tests. e.g. this one.

have you thought of hosting it on a VM on your local machine, then you can firewall it, set up services etc that are as close to your production environment as possible. You can then expose it's ports to outside, but not inside your own network...
