iOS: Distinguish between when app is running in background and when phone is locked?

0

I'm working on a gamified focus timer iOS app. On the app, the user sets a timer when they want to "unplug" from their phone. If the user leaves the app while a focus timer session is active, the session fails. However, I'd like the user to be able to lock their phone without the session failing (to save battery and reduce distraction). To do that, I think I need to track if the phone is locked. That way I can distinguish between the app being in the background because another app is open and the app being in the background because the phone is locked. My problem is that I can't figure out how to do that without using Apple's private API.

If you have ideas, I'd really appreciate your input!
