Correctly encode image/jpg response binary to base64 data URI in Node

0

As part of a Node script I am fetching an image from an API (specifically, profile images from Microsoft Graph).

The response returned is of type 'image/jpeg' and the response body contains a string, that I assume to be binary, which looks something like this:

u0000u0010JFIFu0000{snipped}ko{j챂]Z,3DGG;0u0010?

So from other stack overflow answers and online resources I am using the following code to convert it to a base64 data URI that I can ultimately embed in a web page when my node server returns its response:

const base64 = 'data:' + response.headers['content-type'] + ';base64,' +
new Buffer.from(response.body, 'binary').toString('base64');

This returns an encoded string, but visiting the URI / trying to download the image just shows a blue question mark, or downloads a corrupted image.

But I can't fathom which step in this process is wrong?
