meaning of these 2 sentences
.everyoneloves__top-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__mid-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__bot-mid-leaderboard:empty{ margin-bottom:0;
}
The context is:
“Planning, as alluded to earlier, came late to the adoption of formal
reasoning. Its heritage lay in architecture and surveying, which were craft
activities.”
As I have no prior knowledge in this area, I had 2 questions in this regard. First, in the former sentence, was planning adopted by formal reasoning or formal reasoning was adopted in planning? And in the second one, is planning heritage and a result of architecture and surveying or are those two the heritage and result of planning? I know these questions may seem simple or even stupid, but as I said I have no knowledge in this area and also English is not my first language so any help would be appreciated.

1) means that formal reasoning was adopted in planning but that this happened relatively late, i.e. after formal reasoning had been adopted by other disciplines. 2) means that planning developed out of architecture and surveying. The link is that architecture and surveying were craft activities, so did not put much emphasis on formal reasoning, and the fact that planning developed out of architecture and surveying explains why, at first, it did not put much emphasis on formal reasoning either.
