We have a function room where I work called The Ballroom

We are renaming the room The Sovereigns Room

Should it be The Sovereign's Room or The Sovereigns' Room?

The newly named room is a function room that can be hired and used for events (i.e. meetings or dinners). It was opened by The Queen and portraits of Monarchs (former Sovereigns) will hang in the room. If I read correctly - as we only have one Queen (Sovereign) it should be the Sovereign's Room? OR (sorry for the caps!), as it will keep that name when Charles takes over - should it be Sovereigns'? I really should have paid more attention in school!

If there are multiple sovereigns, the their room would be "The Sofereigns' Room". If there is only one sovereign, then her room would be "The Sovereign's Room".

  • As GEdgar says, think of the apostrophe as an "of". Is this a room of a sovereign, or is this a room of sovereigns. We don't know that, so the question is unanswerable for us. You do know that, so you can answer that question.

  • There doesn't need to be an apostrophe at all, depending on how you're using it.
