Windows Reverts to Old EFS Certificate After New One Created

0

I have added a new EFS certificate to my certificate store by running the cipher /k command. As expected, Windows received a certificate from the AD CA, and at first when I run cipher /y it shows the thumbprint of this new certificate. However, at some point, Windows is switching back to the old EFS certificate on its own.

Is this behavior that I should expect until the old certificate expires next month? I want to set the new default certificate and then update all the encrypted files so they use that one, but I have 600GB of files and don't want to run the risk of this setting flipping back to the old certificate at some point during the process.

According to another post on this site, Windows selects the latest certificate by default, but it seems like that's not the case here since Windows is defaulting BACK to the old certificate, even after I select the new one using rekeywiz.

Any ideas?
