Membership start/since dates not being set since Civi upgrade

When a user signs up for a new membership, the start date and member since date is not being set.
I have looked through the error logs, and there don't seem to be any errors causing this. There was a Geocoder error being thrown when a membership is created, but I resolved that error and it did not resolve the membership date issue.
We recently updated to CiviCRM 5.3.2 from 4.6.28. To the best we can tell, this issue started with the upgrade. I went back to an older version of our site, and was able to create a membership without issue.
I have been looking for an alternative way that we can set these dates. I was thinking either using JQuery to set the dates on membership submission, or a patch in the code. I would prefer a patch, and have tried adding one, but am having trouble finding the exact code that handles the creation of the membership.
Can someone give me guidance on where the codes is located, or does anyone have an idea of another possible solution to this issue?

encourage you to ask this in the civicrm channel at civicrm.stackexchange.com. would also suggest testing to see if the issue persists on a test upgrade to latest version
