Chromium bookmarks suddenly lost

How can I recover lost chromium bookmarks?

I had been using Chromium for several months and periodically stored my browsing situation and the results of my work in the bookmarks. Today Chromium crashed and now I see neither my bookmarks nor browsing history. I.e. all work of several months appears to be lost.

I vaguely remember that when I was using Chromium recently the "Current user" symbol appeared to be green. This makes me suspecting that I may had been logged into a Chromium account. However, I do not use any Chromium accounts and if I had been logged into one that was some mistake. Certainly, I do not know the email associated to that possible account, nor the account itself. I tried several emails I could be using to accidentally create a Chromium account, but none of them worked.

How can I get my bookmarks back? Is it possible to extract them from Chromium servers? I can provide my IP and browsing history details. I am using Ubuntu 16.04.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT:

It appears that the crash and the subsequent bookmark+history loss occurred exactly after Chromium automatically updated to version 71.0.3578.80, revision 538.

  • Do you have the file ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Bookmarks. If this looks like your bookmarks, save it first. Otherwise, search your disk for another Bookmarks file.

  • By the way, I closed and opened Chromium again and now I see an option to "Turn on sync..." in the "Current user". Is it safe to try this?

  • I have a Bookmarks file in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/ . There are links to it from three more folders: ~/snap/chromium/538/.config/gtk-3.0/ , same with 516 and with 509 . I do not have a folder ~/.config/chromium/ or ~/.config/google-chrome/ . Besides, all my bookmarks and browsing history from 3 months ago and earlier are intact. Only the bookmarks and browsing history which were created/recorded during the last 3 months disappeared.

  • If you cannot find a useful Bookmarks file anywhere than this is a lost cause. Sync in effect will preserve the bookmarks with your account. But you will need a sign on.

  • OK Thank you! How can I restore the bookmarks? Can I figure out which account I used or, at least, which email? Can I extract at least the browsing history for the past 3 months from the OS itself? Was it recorded somewhere locally which websites I accessed using Chromium?
