Azure function with Azure AD authentication access using JavaScript

0

After all my failed attempts to get AppService Authentication working, I reached this SO to get some help to resolve the authentication issue with JavaScript.

Scenario: An SPA app in a tenant needs to access a Azure function to make API calls for the application. Both SPA and Azure function are in the same tenant. SPA app will be authenticated first and then based on user actions, it needs to call azure function that is secured with Azure AD authentication.

Problem: Unable to get the token/AppServiceAuthentication cookie for the Azure function to make API calls.

Things I tried:

1) https://{}.azurewebsites.net/.auth/me :- This provides access token for the function with the already logged-in SPA page id_token. As I need to get the tokens in Javascript API, I tried to call with an Ajax call but getting CORS issue as this ./auth/me URL redirects to login.microsoft.online/{tenant}. Setup Azure function CORS to all origins (*) but no luck.

2) MSAL.js :- Used this API by calling acquireTokeSilent, but this API always uses response type= id_token + token and getting the AccessToken and Id_Token back. When I use the AccessToken as bearer while calling Azure function, I'm getting UnAuthorised 401 error.

3) ifFrame: Thought of using iFrame to launch .Auth/me and read the token from iFrame. As it's cross domain, the content cannot be accessed, silly me! Same issue with new child windows.

Did any one use Azure function API from SPA page? Can anyone shed some light on where I'm going wrong please?

Thanks in advance.
