What's the difference between “transfer” and “transference”?
Does their use depend on the context? Or are both words utterly equivalents?

They are not the same. Transfer means generally to move something from one place to another. The thing can be anything that can be moved from place to place.
Transference is a term from psychoanalysis. This is when the patient "Transfers" the problem they have with some person to the therapist. This is done in order to bring the problem/conversation into the present and handle the issue there. Here a Transfer is taking place as well but it has a specific context.
